「（都合の悪いことを）直裁に言う」。こちらのサイトによれば、元々数千年前のギリシャでうまれた慣用表現で、spadeは現在の英語のspade（鋤）とは違うものだった模様。ルネッサンスの頃に誤訳されてしまったそうな。そして時は流れ、１６世紀に英語でよく使われるようになり、さらに時が流れ、spade＝黒人の蔑称、という意味が誕生。そこから「call a spade a spadeといのは人種差別的表現では」と思う人もいるので注意が必要・・・と。でも、本当は全然関係ないです、というのが上記の長い歴史的背景です。
